3-Day Portrait From Life: Pencil or Paint | Nicholas Raynolds | Nov. 7th

Working from the life model, this three day weekend intensive class will offer the student the chance to develop a portrait drawing or painting. Through instructor demonstrations and hands-on practice, participants will consider working methods aimed at increasing their skills of perceptual observation and manual application as relate to the medium of their choice. Recognizing stages in the development of participant's portrait will serve as the discussion point of various topics including achieving a likeness, the steps of developing a piece from the block-in to the final 'rounding of form', human anatomy and proportion, composition, the dynamics and anatomy of light and shadow, analysis of value and color relationships and technical aspects of paint handling and artist's materials. Color and Light Theory | Ron Lemen

Color and light Theory will introduce the student to the properties of color and how color is affected by light. Students will learn how to mix color to achieve desired hue, saturation, and value. Students will work with Color Wheel systems. Facing the bewildering possibilities in tackling this subject, students often over-complicate the process. This class will focus on simple, yet extremely effective, methods and procedures to observe and render the human body in oil paint. Limited palettes will be explored and used in way to make “flesh tones” that are believable and yet easy to mix. In this class, students will learn the steps and techniques of painting the head and torso, and how to make your portrait more than a head study. 5-Day Figure Painting in Oils | Stephen Early | August 20th

This 5-Day workshop will focus on the fundamental principles essential to achieve a convincing three-dimensional representation of the human figure in oils.  These principles will be analyzed in a logical sequence of repetitive exercises, beginning with gesture and Block-ins continuing through to a long pose with the opportunity to apply the principles practiced. We will analyze light and its effect on color and the human form. Focus will be on prioritizing the information unique to each stage, then establishing a cohesive balance between the use of abstract movements and shapes with structure and anatomy. The workshop will be highlighted with demonstrations of these methods and concepts accompanied by question and answer sessions. The format of this workshop will accommodate students of all levels.
